BAKER COUNTY – Smoke from wildfires, particularly the raging Durkee Fire, is severely impacting Baker City and Baker County, with the air quality level reaching an unhealthy 203 — the worst in Oregon.

As the Durkee Fire continues to burn in the south part of the county, residents of the county are experiencing choking smoke and falling ash that has blanketed the area. At last check, the air quality index (AQI) hit 203, indicating conditions that are hazardous to health, especially for sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.

Officials are advising residents to stay indoors, limit physical activity, and use air purifiers if available. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) says it is closely monitoring the situation and providing updates as conditions evolve.

Firefighters are working tirelessly to contain the Durkee Fire and mitigate its impact on the surrounding communities. However, with dry conditions and high winds, containment efforts are challenging.
