SALEM – (News release from the office of Rep. Greg Smith (R-Heppner) Last November, Representative Greg Smith (R-Heppner) visited Stanfield Elementary’s third grade class. He gave a presentation on “how an idea becomes a law” to Ms. Shanna Evans’ class. The interactive exercise was based on establishing an official flavor of ice cream for the State of Oregon. Rep. Smith promised to follow-up with the class during the legislative session in 2024. Today, Representative Smith is pleased to announce that several students will virtually testify before the Joint Ways and Means General Government Subcommittee on February 21st at 3:00. Rep. Smith, who is a Co-Chair of the committee, has invited them to discuss what they learned and the ultimate decision the class made on what they believe Oregon’s official State ice cream should be.

“My students loved it when Rep. Smith came in November and taught them the process of how a bill becomes law. They continue to talk about it and teach their families the information too,” said Ms. Evans, “They are so excited for this opportunity to speak with the committee and are grateful for such an amazing experience”.

“Last year, the students were learning about how an idea becomes a law and now they will be part of the legislative process,” said Rep. Smith, “civic engagement is so critical and I’m glad a group of elementary students will be testifying on their experience learning about the legislative process”.
