LA GRANDE – Eastern Oregon University’s Carlene Sluberski was named the 2020-21 Cascade Collegiate Conference Women’s Wrestling Coach of the Year, announced Thursday. She was voted on by the conference’s head women’s wrestling coaches to earn the award.
“Congratulations to Carlene on her selection as the CCC Women’s Wrestling Coach of the Year,” stated CCC Commissioner Robert Cashell. “It is obvious her peers thought very highly of her accomplishments of not only taking the helm of the program after the season had begun, but also navigating all of the challenges associated with COVID this season.”
In her first season at the helm of leading the Mountaineer women, Sluberski’s squad overcame multiple obstacles and still managed to qualify nine wrestlers for the NAIA Women’s Wrestling National Invite. Highlighting the performance on the national stage was the All-American performances of Erin Redford and Dempsi Talkington. Redford was the National Runner-Up at 143 pounds with a 4-1 record, while Talkington was eighth at 155 pounds with a 3-3 record.
Sluberski was named the EOU Head Women’s Wrestling Coach in November 2020, becoming the third head coach in the program’s history. Prior to joining the Mountaineers, Sluberski led the University of Providence for two seasons.
