BAKER & WALLOWA COUNTIES – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has released information on confirmed and probable wolf depredations for January 2026. In total, six depredations were confirmed in Baker and Wallowa Counties last month, resulting in two dead calves, one dead yearling cow, and four injured calves (one of which was confirmed from a previous event). The majority of depredations occurred in Baker County.
The first depredation was initially investigated on January 4 and occurred on a 170-acre private land pasture in the Middle Bridge Loop area of Baker County. A single 11-month-old-calf was killed, with wolves in the Keating AKWA (area of known wolf activity) being confirmed responsible. The depredation is estimated to have occurred around 10 hours prior to investigation.
The second depredation was initially investigated on January 6 and occurred on a 512-acre private land pasture in the Eagle Creek area of Baker County. This investigation also included a follow up confirmation of a depredation that occurred on the same property on October 24, 2025. Two 11-month-old calves were injured (one in the recent event and one in the October event) with wolves in the Keating AKWA being confirmed responsible. The more recent depredation is estimated to have occurred 2 weeks prior to investigation.
The third depredation was initially investigated on January 11 and occurred on a 200-acre private land pasture in the Keating area of Baker County. One yearling cow was killed, with wolves in the Keating AKWA again being confirmed responsible. The depredation is estimated to have occurred 5 hours prior to investigation.
The fourth depredation was initially investigated on January 17 and occurred on a 10-acre private land pasture in the Paradise area of Wallowa County. A single 9-month-old-calf was killed, with wolves in the Grouse Flats AKWA being confirmed responsible. The depredation is estimated to have occurred less than 12 hours prior to investigation.
The fifth depredation was initially investigated on January 27 and occurred on a 100-acre private land pasture in the Keating area of Baker County. A single 11-month-old calf was killed, with the wolves in the Keating AKWA being confirmed responsible. The depredation is estimated to have occurred around 3 hours prior to investigation.
The sixth and final Northeast Oregon wolf depredation reported for January was initially investigated on January 28 and occurred on a 100-acre private land pasture in the Keating area of Baker County. Like with the January 27 event, a single 11-month-old calf was killed, with the wolves in the Keating AKWA being confirmed responsible. The depredation is estimated to have occurred around 4 hours prior to investigation.
