Siren could sound in Waitsburg

WAITSBURG – The Waitsburg City Council seeks community input on what to do with the siren above the Weller Public Library on Main Street. Council members are considering using it to announce the daily noon hour or to notify residents of an emergency. The siren hasn’t been in daily use for years and there’s some concern it could be a disruption to people in their homes and businesses.

There would be some cost to the city for moving and managing the siren, which City Administrator Randy Hinchliffe said should not be confused with the speaker on top the old city hall.

“That (speaker) isn’t in really any type of condition to use for anything beyond the two parades we have,” he said.

Before costs are incurred involving the siren, the city council would like community input. The Waitsburg Commercial Club has begun distributing surveys via email. Members of the community can also email Hinchliffe at administrator@cityofwaitsburg.com. He will forward comments to city council.

The Waitsburg City Council would particularly like to hear from those living or working in the Main Street business corridor.
