Shot fired in traffic stop

BOARDMAN – The Oregon State Police reports that during a pursuit in Morrow County, a Boardman police officer fired his duty weapon at a car that was traveling at a high rate of speed through residential areas of the city. Gregory Ryan Salverda, 52, of Boardman was taken into custody and hospitalized with what OSP reports to be minor injuries.

The pursuit began when deputies from the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office attempted to perform a traffic stop on the vehicle. The driver eluded MCSO into the city of Boardman. OSP states that the officer in question hit the fleeing vehicle. The car was stopped in the vicinity of West Main Street and Boardman Avenue by OSP.

The officer who fired the weapon has been placed on administrative leave, as required by Oregon law, until an investigation into the incident is complete. The Morrow/Umatilla Major Crime Team is the investigating agency. Those assisting in the pursuit and subsequent investigation include Oregon State Police, Boardman Police Department, Pendleton Police Department, Hermiston Police Department, Milton-Freewater Police Department, Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, the district attorneys’ offices in Morrow and Umatilla County, and the Oregon State Police Crime Lab.
