PENDLETON – The Pendleton Round-Up’s Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign will mark its 18th year on Sept. 12. The event is held to raise awareness of breast cancer, and support breast cancer patients and survivors.
TETWP donates 100 percent of its proceeds to three local organizations that support those impacted by breast cancer. They are the CHI St. Anthony Hospital Cancer Clinic, the Eastern Oregon Cancer Network, and the Kickin’ Cancer New Beginnings program. Last year’s event raised a record $40,000 for the three organizations.
Survivors of all types of cancer are asked to walk with the group of breast cancer survivors. They meet in the south tunnel near sections J-K-L just before the start of the first Indian relay race. There will also be a special video presentation on the arena’s big screen.
The Happy Canyon princesses and the Round-Up court also participate in the walk of survivors. This year, Pendleton City Manager Robb Corbett has had an up-close look at the workings behind the scenes of the rodeo. He said he’s so impressed with all the volunteer hours that go into making the event work throughout the year. Corbett also stressed that he never understood what the rodeo demands from its board of directors.
“It’s just an immense commitment of time and money and sacrifice by the families of the Round-Up directors that goes into making this happen,” he said.
Corbett’s daughter, Olivia, is one of the Round-Up princesses this year.
