Shooting investigation continues

HERMISTON – The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office has released more information regarding a shooting last night. Here is the latest news release from UCSO:

On October 29, 2020, at around 8:18 p.m., a male called Umatilla County dispatch on 911 to report that he and his father were involved in an altercation with two other men near Sagebrush Rd and Bensel Rd outside of Hermiston. The reporting male said he shot the two other men, allegedly in self-defense. He also reported that his father sustained a gunshot wound during the altercation, and he was driving his father to the hospital. When deputies arrived in the area, they located two males who were deceased.  The deceased persons were identified as 18 year old, Raymond Ryan Rios, and 19 year old, Hugo Madrigal-Leon, both from Hermiston.

The Umatilla Morrow Major Crime Team, the Oregon State Police Forensics Lab and Umatilla County District Attorney responded to the scene, and are currently working on this active investigation. We will release more information as soon as it’s possible.

The Hermiston School District also issued a release which appears to be related to the incident Thursday night:

The Hermiston School District has been notified of the death of a current senior and a recent graduate. This is a difficult day for our staff and students. When things like this happen, everyone reacts differently, including sadness, fear and anger.

A virtual safe room has been set up by members of the crisis flight team to assist students dealing with today’s news. The district asks for parent and community support by keeping an eye out for those students, or staff members, that may be struggling with the news. If a student is struggling with the news, counselors are available to provide emotional support.

We are heartbroken for the affected families. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them and the friends of the students.
