PENDLETON – Pendleton Police Chief Chuck Byram says multiple shots fired reports came into 911 at about 12:40 p.m. today. The shots were fired at a vehicle that left the scene of the Marigold Hotel on Southwest Court at a high rate of speed.
The car crashed at Main and Court and the people in the car fled on foot. The suspected shooter was found hiding in the basement of the Marigold and was taken into custody. The occupants of the vehicle were also located inside a residence. Byram said one of them is being treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
Police are still investigating the incident. More details were released at approximately 5:55 p.m. from the Pendleton Police Department:
November 9, 2021 at 12:40 p.m., Pendleton Police Department personnel, assisted by Oregon State Police, Umatilla Tribal Police Department & Milton-Freewater Police Department responded to several 911 calls reporting a shooting at The Marigold Hotel, 105 SE Court Avenue. It was reported that several shots were fired by an individual at the hotel at a red Volkswagen Jetta that was parked in the 100 block of SE 1st Street. It was reported that some type of verbal altercation occurred before the shooting.
The driver of the Jetta fled the area while being shot at by the individual at the hotel. The driver of the Jetta lost control of the vehicle at South Main Street and Court Avenue. The occupants of the vehicle fled, leaving the vehicle at the scene. Officers arrived within minutes and learned from witnesses that the individual responsible for shooting at the vehicle was somewhere inside the hotel. While a search was being conducted of the hotel, other officers responded to the crash scene in an attempt to locate the occupants of the vehicle and render aid to any injured individuals.
Officers at the crash scene were able to locate the occupants of the vehicle at a nearby residence where they discovered that a 17-year-old male suffered a gunshot wound to the right forearm. Pendleton Medics transported the juvenile male to St. Anthony Hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury to the forearm.
Officers at the hotel located a subject matching the description of the person responsible for the shooting hiding in the basement of the hotel. Officers detained 40-year-old Pendleton resident Steven Moses Enko without incident. An investigation at the scene produced evidence linking Steven M. Enko to the shooting.
After consultation with the Umatilla County District Attorney’s Office, Steven M. Enko was lodged at the Umatilla County Jail charging: Attempted Murder, Attempted Assault I (X4), Assault II, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Pointing a Firearm at Another and Unlawful Use of a Firearm. This case will be referred to the Umatilla County District Attorney’s Office.
