RITZVILLE – A meeting of Eastern Washington sheriffs was held last week in Ritzville to address the growing concerns surrounding predatory animals, especially wolves and cougars, and how they are negatively impacting public safety. Joining the group were two cattle producers who spoke about having been repeatedly victimized by wolves, as well as two specialists working in the field of depredation investigation and management.
Frustrations were expressed by many sheriffs with the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission’s recent decision not to down-list wolves in a portion of Washington where wolves have recovered substantially above their targeted numbers, limiting cougar hunting opportunities, and eliminating the spring black bear harvests. These animals have increasingly been involved in human and livestock interaction posing significant risk to public safety.
It was decided at the meeting to form a coalition of Eastern Washington sheriffs in partnership with cattle producers and county commissioners. The goal is to have a stronger collective voice when in comes to dealing with predatory animals while keeping the public safe, plus strengthening partnerships with legislators and the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The Eastern Washington sheriffs are also seeking more collaboration with WDFW staff, plus more transparency and better communication with the department.
