GRANT COUNTY – December 8th is the date Oregon Measure 114 is set to go into effect, and many questions are popping up regarding firearm purchases in the State of Oregon. As it stands (provided a stay is not granted in court), all purchasers of firearms within the state must hold the proper licensure beginning next Friday. Grant County Sheriff Todd McKinley said since there’s not a system in place to grant those licenses, folks may not be able to buy a gun for some time:

“…and currently there is nothing set up for that to actually happen on the 8th. There is no means to electronically transmit information so you could get this supposed card. So, it could be months after the 8th for this to ever get set into effect.”

There’s currently a massive backlog of folks wishing to buy firearms who are waiting on their background checks:

“I think there [are] about 20,000 people in the cue waiting for background [checks], and on December 8th if you’re, like, number three in the cue when the clock strikes midnight, you have to start over. You have to wait and get the card to be able to purchase a gun.”

The first court date regarding the lawsuit challenging the measure is tomorrow, December 2nd.
