PRAIRIE CITY – The Prairie City Rural Fire Department responded to a structure fire early Friday evening. Fire trucks were dispatched to a location on Pine Creek Road for a shed fire.

According to Prairie City Fire Chief Marvin Rynearson, property owner Tom Berry was burning grass on his property. Berry made sure to soak the outside of the shed with water prior to burning, but the fire made its way under the siding, which caused it to go up in flames.

Chief Rynearson said the shed is considered a loss, as well as about 50% of its contents. Firefighters were able to get the fire out and were back at the station within about 45 minutes.

Chief Rynearson wants to stress the importance of preventing siding fires such as this one. He said 5 or 6 structures have been lost in the Prairie City Fire District within the last few years to that same cause.
