MASSILLON, Ohio – Shearer’s Foods has said a quick rebuild of the potato chip plant that was the scene of an explosion last month is not possible. In a news release, Chief Executive Officer Bill Nictakis announced the company is ending employment for its more than 200 employees.

“We have not yet decided the future of the Shearer’s Hermiston site,” a news release from the company stated. “This has led to the very difficult decision to end employment for our team members.”

Nictakis said the company is exploring the possibility of relocating some employees who are interested in working at other plants. It has also provided a severance and benefits package for them. In addition, the news release stated the company has been working with organizations in the Hermiston area to stage events to benefit former employees including food drives and job fairs.

The CEO also thanked first responders to the explosion and fire and said the company appreciated the outpouring of support it has received from community businesses and local governments.
