GRANT COUNTY – Resources are reportedly on scene for several wildfire starts throughout the local area. All of the incidents reported so far are all under an acre in size according to WildCAD.
Firefighters were able to contain and control the Dry Creek Wildfire northwest of Mt. Vernon at a tenth of an acre.
The Dead Cow Fire near the Middle Fork, northwest of Bates State Park is reported at a quarter acre with resources on scene.
The Geary Fire near Laycock Creek was stopped at a tenth of an acre. Also, the Nugget Fire is reported as contained and controlled south of Fox.
Currently, a Red Flag Warning is in place for the Ochoco-John Day Highlands and Southern Blue Mountains of John Day. The National Weather Service has the warning in effect through 11:00 tonight. Another round of thunderstorms is expected to hit later this afternoon and last through the evening hours. While many of these storms are expected to be wet, lightning strikes outside the rain core, as well as strong outflow winds, still possess the potential to cause new wildfire starts and rapidly spread existing ones.
