CANYON CITY – A local man was presented with a special, yet bittersweet award at Wednesday’s Grant County Court meeting. Sheriff Todd McKinley presented Seth Landin with the Grant County Sheriff’s Office Lifesaving Award for his heroic actions following a devastating vehicle fire on U.S. Highway 26 in November of last year.
As reflected in an earlier report, a release from Sheriff McKinley states that Bob Shive, 81, of Prairie City’s vehicle filled with smoke. Shive was able to stop the car but was thereafter incapacitated by the noxious smoke.
Landin, seeing the incident on the highway, took the initiative and broke out the vehicle’s window and removed Shive from the vehicle. Sheriff McKinley stated in the release that without these actions by Landin, there is a high possibility that Shive would have perished at the scene.
Unfortunately, weeks later in the hospital, Bob Shives succumbed to his injuries sustained in the vehicle fire. Ginger Shives, Bob’s wife, was present at the meeting and exchanged an emotional embrace with Landin after the award presentation.
