WALLA WALLA – Second Avenue is now open. However, some work remains to be done including placement of sidewalks, driveways, lighting, and traffic signals. The street will have to close again.
For the time being, the intersection at Second Avenue and Poplar Street will operate as an all-way stop until the new traffic signal is installed. City staff said this final stage of the project has progressed more slowly due to components not being available when expected because of delays in the supply chain.
Although Second Avenue is now open to motorists, work will continue. Drivers are asked to travel slowing and cautiously through the active work zone, plus comply with all signage to ensure the workers’ safety.
Only a base layer of asphalt has currently been placed and limited street striping has been completed. That means when the work that’s continuing is completed, Second Avenue will be closed again. This will allow the final layer of paving and permanent striping to be completed.
