School’s in session so motorists should be alert

PENDLETON – Students are heading back to school in Pendleton tomorrow (Thursday). The Pendleton Police Department is asking motorists to slow down, stay alert, and help keep kids safe.
Police Chief Tony Nelson issued a list of reminders that apply to all school districts:
- Watch for pedestrians and always yield to people in crosswalks.
- Stop for school buses when the red warning lights are flashing. Never pass a stopped bus.
- Slow down in school zones and obey posted speed limits.
- Watch for youth on bicycles and scooters, especially near schools, sidewalks, and intersections.
- Put down the distractions and keep your eyes on the road.
- Give yourself extra time—kids don’t always act predictably, and a few extra seconds can make all the difference.
“Let’s work together to make getting to and from school safe for everyone,” Nelson said.
Also, in addition to watching for young people on foot, bicycles, or scooters, motorists should also remember a crop of new drivers will be heading for classes at the high school.
