OLYMPIA – Walla Walla Public Schools has been informed by state educational leaders that mask mandates are not a local decision. The message from the Washington State School Directors Association and Washington Association of School Administrators stated when it comes to the requirement on face covering, that decision falls squarely on the Washington State Department of Health and Governor Jay Inslee at this time.

The state’s message was prompted by concerns from families and community members regarding the state requirement for mask use in schools during the summer and possibly the 2021-2022 school year.

“As our state continues to reopen and many of the mitigation measures are lifted, it is important to note that as of today, face covering requirements in our schools remain in place,” WSSDA Executive Director Tim Garchow and WASA Executive Director Joel Aune wrote in a message to the state’s school directors and superintendents.

According to the Washington State Department of Health, COVID-19 safety requirements for schools could change prior to the coming school year.State Superintendent Chris Reykdal said recently that updated guidance from state health officials may be released by the end of July, providing masking and other safety measures for the coming school year.

Walla Walla Public Schools officials say they are in close communication with state educational leaders and will promptly communicate any updates or changes from the state.
