RV and trailer fire temporarily closes eastbound I-84 near Baker City

BAKER CITY — (Press release from Baker City Fire and Rescue) The Baker City Fire Department and several neighboring agencies responded Tuesday afternoon to an RV and trailer fire on eastbound Interstate 84 near milepost 311.

While crews were en route, Baker City Fire Chief Michael Carlson reported a working fire and requested additional personnel and water tenders.

Upon arrival, the crew of Baker City Engine 2431 deployed hose lines and began applying water to the fire. Additional water resources supplied the engine, and firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Eastbound lanes of I-84 were temporarily closed to allow crews to operate safely. After the flames were knocked down, the Oregon Department of Transportation reopened one lane and traffic began moving through the area.

The vehicle owners told firefighters they were unaware of the fire until occupants of a passing vehicle flagged them down and alerted them.

The RV sustained significant damage, and the trailer was a total loss. The trailer was carrying an off-road vehicle and other items. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

The fire originated in the front portion of the trailer. Its cause remains under investigation.

The Baker City Fire Department extends its appreciation to North Powder Fire District, Keating Fire District, Baker Rural Fire District, Greater Bowen Valley Fire District, Durkee Rural Fire Protection Association, Oregon State Police, the Oregon Department of Transportation and Baker County Emergency Management for their assistance. The department also recognizes the Baker County Sheriff’s Office Communications Section for coordinating radio traffic throughout the incident.
