PENDLETON – A rebuilt ice rink is on the horizon for Roy Raley Park. Pendleton Parks and Recreation Director Liam Hughes said the current rink was purchased by the city in 1999, and many of the elements in the rink were used at the time of that purchase.
“We managed to get a grant through Oregon State Parks, which will help us completely rebuild the ice rink,” Hughes said. “The concrete that the ice rink sits on is failing.”
In addition to the failing concrete, the rubber tubing that carry refrigerant to build the ice one layer at a time are in bad shape. The vision is to place new tubes into the new concrete.
The grant is for $330,000 and Hughes estimates the total cost of the project will be about $500,000. He is looking for other revenue sources to make up the difference. The city will be sending out requests for proposals in January. Hughes is hopeful the project can be completed over one summer, so the rink will not have to be closed for the winter before it’s finished.
