UMATILLA COUNTY – The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office has permission to hire a new patrol deputy and transport deputy. Meanwhile, the office is already short personnel for everything from dispatch to the jail.

He urges people interested in law enforcement to apply for one of the openings. Meanwhile, he’s closer to meeting his goal of having patrol coverage around the clock, but he’s not there yet.

“We want to make sure that we have the capacity to be able to send at least two deputies to any call, wherever it is in the county,” Rowan said.

He added that if you hire an officer today, he can’t start work the next day. Extensive training must be performed, including a four-month stint at the police academy in Salem.

“That’s why we have a signing bonus for lateral hires,” he said. “There’s such an upfront investment in someone that’s never been in law enforcement.”
