PENDLETON – Jesse Brown of Baker is closing in on the top five to make the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. He jumped up to seventh after rallying from third place to capture the steer wrestling buckle at the Pendleton Round-Up on Saturday.
His time of 18.3 seconds on three head earned him $9,247, putting his total earnings on the season up to $105,601.18.
“That money from Pendleton will help a ton toward making the NFR,” Brown said in an interview with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). “That has been my focus.”
Brown has appeared at the NFR for the last five years. The 32-year-old Baker City native captured third place in the world last year.
“I can’t wait for it,” Brown said in the PRCA interview. “I can’t wait to prepare for it. The end goal is to try and win the whole thing.”
Dalton Massey of Hermiston is the leader in prize money so far with a total of $173,012.94. Dakota Eldridge of Elko, Nevada is second with $156,165.29. Third place is occupied by Will Lummus of Mississippi, with $148,837.27. J.D. Struxness is in fourth at $122,733.61. Stetson Jorgensen of Blackfoot, Idaho has amassed $118,733.26 in fifth place while Don Payne of Stephenville, Texas sits at sixth with $115,019.37.
