WALLA WALLA – (News release from city of Walla Walla) The contractor has energized the pedestrian crossing signals and removed the traffic signals at the intersection of Rose Street and Colville Street. The updated design allows eastbound and westbound traffic on Rose Street to move continuously through the intersection while incorporating signalized pedestrian crossings. A controlled two-way intersection replaces the traffic signals for northbound and southbound traffic on Colville Street.
This work is in coordination with the Rose Street Pavement Preservation and Signal Modification Project, which includes upgrading traffic signals at seven intersections. Additionally, pedestrian beacons will be installed at the intersections of Rose Street with Avery Street and Colville Street.
A traffic analysis determined that the Colville Street intersection did not meet the requirements for a traffic signal. The existing signal has been replaced with rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs) to enhance pedestrian safety and improve traffic flow. This change also resulted in an estimated cost savings of $350,000 for the project.
