Roberts: Decision to retire not based on frustrations alone

PENDLETON – Pendleton Police Chief Stuart Roberts doesn’t like the current climate as it relates to law enforcement. However, he says that did not play a major role in his decision to retire.

“I think we lack strong leadership at every level,” he said. “That may be one of my greatest frustrations. But frustrations alone aren’t what’s really pushed me to this decision.”

Roberts has been in law enforcement for 29 years and has served as chief for 18 years. He said he’s stepping down because it’s simply time to go.

“It’s not a situation where I’m unhappy,” he said. “It’s not a situation where I’m in trouble. This is something where I made a vow to be everything that I could be all the time. In my youth, I had much more energy for such things.”

City Manager Robb Corbett will decide who Pendleton’s next police chief will be.
