COLLEGE PLACE and WALLA WALLA – Two separate road construction projects start today (Monday). One is along State Route 125 and the other is in downtown Walla Walla.
For the first project, the Washington State Department of Transportation will resume work on State Route 125 from the Oregon state line south of College Place to the Plaza Way roundabout in Walla Walla. Crews will be performing stormwater work, permanent traffic and pedestrian markings, along with other construction work. There will be lane closures and speed reductions for the next couple of weeks, 24 hours a day, seven days a week along portions of the SR-125 project.
For the second project, Nelson Construction will close the intersection of Main Street and First Avenue in downtown Walla Walla beginning today to reconstruct the intersection. This work is part of the WalaWala Plaza project.
Reconstruction of the intersection will replace failing underground utility infrastructures, address recurring settlement problems in the road and upgrade the traffic signal to be fully accessible for pedestrians. New roadway surfacing will also match the plaza and enhance accessibility for the visually impaired.
The full closure of the intersection is expected to last until May 4. During this closure, on street parking on Main Street between Second Avenue and Colville Street will be available. The city of Walla Walla asks the public to continue to support local businesses during construction.
