ELGIN – Union County Public Works will be conducting road widening along a portion of Summerville Road beginning May 6 and lasting through the end of May, assuming good weather. Work will specifically be carried out on a three-mile stretch of road beginning at Highway 204 and ending at Sanderson Springs Road. This is part of a longer-term effort by Public Works to widen roughly 3 miles of Summerville Road each year.
While work is ongoing, drivers should expect narrow lanes of travel, reduced speeds, and delays of up to 20 minutes. Traffic will be controlled by flaggers and pilot cars.
In addition, some drivers may have noticed a “local traffic only” sign above the road work notice sign at the intersection of Summerville Road and Highway 204. Public works have stated that this is a seasonal sign to help guide diverted freeway traffic during winter highway closures and is unrelated to the upcoming road widening. The sign will be taken down later for the summer season.
