Crane-Over the weekend, personnel from Burns Interagency Fire Zone (BIFZ) and Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) provided basic fire training to new members of the Crane Rangeland Fire Protection Association (RFPA).
In brief, the two-day class consisted of: introduction to wildland fire behavior, including the primary components of the wildland fire environment (fuels, weather, topography); how different environment characteristics affect fire behavior and risks to firefighters; the purpose of the Standard Firefighting Orders and Watch Out Situations; explanation of the Lookouts, Communications, Escape Routes, and Safety Zones (LCES) system; learning various terminology and communication methods used in wildland fire; understanding the standards, tools and equipment, and various methods used in fire line construction and how to extinguish a fire with or without the use of water.
Partnership with RFPAs is essential to our firefighting efforts as they are often the first on scene, especially in our more remote locations.
