Residential structure fire under investigation in La Grande

LA GRANDE – (Press release from the La Grande Police Department) Emergency crews responded to a residential structure fire shortly after 12:15 a.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026, at a residence located at 1806 26th Street.

Police officers and firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and fire originating from beneath the residence and extending up the exterior wall. By the time fire crews began suppression efforts, flames had spread throughout the structure and were visible from multiple windows.

All occupants had safely evacuated the residence prior to the arrival of emergency personnel, and no injuries were reported.

According to individuals at the scene, occupants first noticed the odor of smoke near the rear of the residence, followed by smoke appearing through the floor. After opening the rear door, they observed flames beneath the structure and immediately called 911.

Police officers secured the area and closed portions of the roadway to allow firefighters to safely conduct suppression operations.

As part of the preliminary investigation, officers contacted nearby residents to determine whether surveillance footage was available. Cameras from neighboring residences were reviewed; however, investigators determined they did not capture the cause or origin of the fire prior to it becoming visible.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and secured the structure. The residence was boarded up, and the scene was preserved for a follow-up investigation by the fire marshal.
