RICHLAND, Washington – Rescuers in Eastern Washington took cowboy ingenuity to the water Sunday to save a pair of goats swept away by the flooding Yakima River while trapped inside a chemical tank.

Members of Columbia Basin Dive Rescue responded to reports of an adult male goat and a kid drifting downstream in a white plastic container. The duo, since nicknamed “Billy” and “The Kid,” was caught in swift currents filled with debris.

After navigating the floodwaters to reach the drifting tank, team members used ropes to lasso the animals and guide them safely back to shore.

Both goats were evaluated by the rescue team and found to be unharmed. Following the operation, officials successfully located the owners and returned the pair home.

“Whether it’s people or goats, we’re always ready to answer the call,” the agency said in a statement, jokingly referring to the mission as the “G.O.A.T. of all rescue operations”.
