Repaving of Pendleton’s North Main Street begins this week

PENDLETON – Work on repaving North Main Street in Pendleton begins this week with some preparatory work including ADA ramp construction. Motorists should expect temporary lane restrictions and delays during the project which will extend from the Umatilla River bridge to just past the intersection with Northwest Furnish Avenue.

During the course of the project motorists can expect temporary lane restrictions and delays. Additional traffic control information will be announced as the contractor schedules it.

The Americans with Disabilities Act requires updates to pedestrian crossings whenever a road is repaved or reconstructed. The project starts with that work.

“We are unsure of the required timeline needed to complete the ADA ramps, but we would guess that it would be at least a couple of weeks or more,” Community Development Director Tim Simons said. “Hopefully, the contractor can provide us a preliminary schedule sometime next week for the rest of the project.”

This portion of North Main Street was built in the early 1900s. It has been patched and repaired many times using the technologies and materials available at those times. Because of that, sections of the road have deteriorated at different rates. Typically, the rebuild of a historic road would be done with a full reconstruction. However, officials believe the roadway was constructed directly on top of bedrock. That’s why city staff chose to grind and overlay the 66-foot-wide roadway.

The project includes leveling with at least two inches of new asphalt across the entire width of the street and, in some areas, up to four inches. The contractor for the project is Interstate Concrete & Asphalt of Pendleton with a low bid of $348,388.

Project updates will be posted at Pendleton Projects – North Main Street Overlay.
