EASTERN OREGON – A reminder to Eastern Oregon drivers, the deadline to remove studded tires is Wednesday, April 1, less than a week away. Each winter, Oregon law allows motorists to use studded tires on their vehicles from November 1 through March 31. Use of studded tires after the cutoff could result in a $165 dollar fine from law enforcement.
For drivers planning on traveling through winter-like conditions after the cutoff date, ODOT recommends using other forms of studless traction tires, carrying chains, or simply waiting for conditions to improve. Long-term, ODOT also recommends drivers use alternatives to studded tires. All-weather tires can provide a similar level of traction to studded types, while providing greater traction on bare pavement, as well as reducing wear and tear on the road’s surface.
