LA GRANDE – While traffic accidents and highway closures may be more pressing concerns when it comes to ice buildup, sidewalks and pathways can get coated all the same. Though Eastern Oregon has experienced a relatively mild winter so far, stubborn patches of ice are just as capable of causing pedestrians to fall down as they are cars to roll over. In order to avoid any unwanted tailbone related visits to the emergency room this winter, city of La Grande parks and rec has a few basic tips on how to avoid slipping on icy sidewalks:

  • Keep your knees relaxed. Don’t lock your knees when walking on ice.
  • Point your toes out to help keep balance.
  • Take short steps. Avoid putting weight on a single foot for too long.
  • Walk slowly. Impatience now could mean a hospital bill later.
  • Keep your hands outside of your pockets. Even in cold temperatures, an unexpected fall will hurt much more than a few minutes of windchill.
