NORTHEAST OREGON — The start of the new school year is just around the corner and that means schools and school zones will be bustling with activity again.

This means school buses will be running routes and getting local kids to schools.

With this in mind, local law enforcement agencies such as the La Grande Police Department want to share a few reminders about school bus safety

  • Prepare to stop when a slowing bus has its overhead yellow lights flashing.
  • Stop at least 20 feet away from buses when red lights are flashing, unless driving in the opposite direction on a divided highway.
  • Slow down to the posted 20 miles per hour in all school zones.
  •  Be on the lookout – for crossing guards, bicycles and playgrounds that indicate children might be in the area.
  • Watch for children between parked cars and other objects.
  • Use additional caution in these areas when the weather is bad.

Everyone on the road shares the responsibility of keeping children safe. Drivers must be aware, patient, and respectful of school buses and school zones to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of students.

Remember, practicing school bus safety isn’t just a legal obligation, but a moral one as well. Following these guidelines helps protect the lives of young students and contributes to a safer community overall.
