WALLA WALLA COUNTY – Registration is now open for boaters ages 12 and older to attend the free Adventures in Boating classes. Walla Walla County Sheriff Chief Deputy Richard Schram, a state certified boater education class instructor, will be teaching the classes to certify boaters to receive their mandatory Washington State Parks Boater Education Card.

There are two classes to choose from Saturday, May 11 at Fire Station No. 51, 460 W. Humorist Rd. in Burbank and Saturday, May 25 at Fire Station No. 41, 2251 Howard Street in Walla Walla.

State law requires anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1955, operating a vessel of 15 horsepower or more to possess a boater education card. The boater must carry the card on the vessel and have it available for inspection by law enforcement officers.

People are not required to have a state driver’s license to obtain a boater education card. Therefore, boaters 12 years of age and older are eligible. The Washington Boater Education Card is recognized by other states requiring a boater education card. Possession of a boater education card is proof that the holder has successfully completed all the components of an approved boating safety course. The boating education card or certificate does not expire and does not need to be renewed. Seating for either class is limited and is on a first-come first-served basis.

To reserve a seat, email Chief Deputy Richard Schram at RSchram@co.walla-walla.wa.us. A return email will be sent to confirm a spot in the class.
