HARNEY COUNTY-Region 14 hazmat team from Ontario Oregon Fire and Rescue is heading to help with the flooding response in Harney County. The team is responding to a reported chemical and fuel smell. They will be doing some monitoring to make sure there is nothing harmful.
Regional teams have specialized equipment to help identify and monitor hazardous materials. They are also equipped with booms to prevent materials from entering nearby rivers and streams.
The agency’s mission is to protect people, property and the environment from fire and hazardous materials. The Regional Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Teams respond to these types of incidents when they exceed the resources of local jurisdictions. There are 12 teams across the state of Oregon.
