HARNEY COUNTY-With fire conditions improving and evacuation zones being steadily downgraded or lifted across the region, emergency officials have announced the upcoming closure of the local Red Cross shelter at the Crane High School dorms.
The shelter, which served as a critical refuge for residents displaced by the 2026 Burns Basin Fires, is scheduled to officially wrap up operations by 12:00 PM on Thursday, August 5, 2026.
The closure marks a positive turning point in the response to the Burns Basin Fires, as firefighters gain ground and more residents are cleared to safely return to their homes.
