Recount for Dixie School District levy to be held Tuesday

DIXIE – The Walla Walla County Auditor’s Office has announced a recount for the Dixie School District’s Proposition 2.

The replacement capital levy for health, safety, and energy-efficiency improvements failed by only one vote, with 108 ballots voting “against”, and 107 voting “for”.  Dixie Superintendent Jacob Bang told Elkhorn Media Group on February 24 that a request for a recount had been submitted to the county.

The recount will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. in the ballot processing room at the election center at 315 W. Main St. in Walla Walla, where the counting of all 217 ballots in the Dixie precinct will be conducted once those ballots have been sorted out.

Observers will be allowed at the recount to “protect the integrity of the election and preserve public confidence.” The following rules will be applied to any members of the public wishing to observe:

• Observers have the right to witness the proceedings for the purpose of ascertaining if

the statutes and rules pertaining to counts or recounts are properly carried out.

• The County Auditor may limit the number of observers to one (1) representative from

each major political party.

• Observers shall sign in daily.

• Observers must wear an identification tag.

-Their name and representation, if any, is to be noted. Representation is not

  required for observers not affiliated with a party.

            -Identification tags shall be visible.

• Observers are not allowed to move about the room.

-Observers are to remain in the space designated by the auditor.

-At the discretion of the Auditor, the observer may have the opportunity to

 change their designated space; however, no disruption to the counting or

 Processing Boards is allowed.

• Observers may not make a record of the names, addresses, or other information on the envelopes, ballots, or log sheets.

• Ballots shall be handled only by members of the canvassing board or their duly authorized representatives.

• Witnesses shall be permitted to observe the ballots and the process of tabulating the

votes, but they shall not be permitted to handle the ballots. RCW 29A.60.170 (2).

• Observer shall not touch ballot containers.

• Observer shall not operate vote tallying systems.

• No disruptive behavior is allowed.

-One (1) warning will be given and if a repeat offense, the offender will be

 escorted from the building.

• No electioneering or political talk is allowed.

• Cell phones shall be put away.

-No still pictures or video may be taken with cell phone, camera, or any sort of

 recording devices.
