Rattlesnake awareness in Harney County

HARNEY COUNTY-Residents are being urged to exercise heightened caution while enjoying the outdoors this summer. Following a recent incident where a community member was bitten by a juvenile rattlesnake near Pettibone Avenue, the City of Hines is alerting the public to an increase in rattlesnake sightings in and around the area.
As temperatures continue to rise, rattlesnakes are becoming more active. To ensure personal safety while recreating or spending time outdoors, officials recommend the following precautions:
- Stay Alert: Maintain awareness of your surroundings while hiking, walking, or spending time outdoors.
- Watch Your Step: Be mindful of exactly where you are stepping, especially in areas with natural cover.
- Keep Pets Leashed: Ensure pets remain on a leash at all times to prevent them from wandering into potentially hazardous areas.
- Avoid Hiding Spots: Do not reach into tall grass, brush, or rocky areas where snakes may be hiding.
If you happen to encounter a rattlesnake, the recommended course of action is to give it plenty of space and allow it to move away on its own. Do not attempt to touch, capture, or disturb the snake.
