Ranger Station Progress, Cleanup Day Updates and More from the City of Union.

UNION – (Information from the City of Union Newsletter) The City of Union is kicking off May with a few projects as well as a few reminders for residents.
The city council has voted to self-contract the ranger station remodel project due to insufficient bids. According to City Administrator Doug Wiggins, Union only received a single bid for $270,000 dollars. The council moved to “be our own general contractor” with the hopes of keeping project costs under $100,000 dollars.
On that note, the council will meet again on May 8. The primary focus of this meeting will be to, as written by Wiggins, “discuss placing the annexation of city fire and EMS services into the Union Rural Fire Protection District on the ballot for August.” This will include a public hearing at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Almquist Chambers at City Hall.
As a reminder, the City of Union is planning a cleanup day for May 6. Cleanup will run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 410 Treatment Plant Road and is for Union residents only. Accepted items include yard debris, tires without rims (8 per household) electronics, bikes and outdoor kid’s toys. Non-accepted items include household garbage, hazardous waste (including paint and chemicals), shingles, ashes and batteries.
Lastly, Union would like to remind residents of its ordinance concerning noxious weed and tall grass control. Tall grasses are classified as non-ornamental grasses that grow over 10 inches tall. Tall weeds fall under the same category. Noxious weeds comprise 28 different species within the tri-county area, with the most common species including Puncture Vine, Knapweed, White Top and Thistle. It is the responsibility of property owners and tenants to dispose of tall grasses and weeds with citations being issued for noncompliance.
