LA GRANDE – (Information from the La Grande Fire Department) It may be January, but Oregon has seemingly entered its customary “fake spring” phase. Though snow has been replaced largely by rain for the time being, that doesn’t mean there aren’t unique driving hazards to watch out for. The La Grande Fire Department has provided the following list of safety recommendations for driving in rainy conditions.

  • “Slow down! Leave early to give yourself more travel time. Be aware that your brakes can be affected by water.
  • Keep both hands on the wheel. Avoid distractions such as cell phones.
  • Turn on your headlights so you are visible to other drivers!
  • Maintain a proper following distance; use the 3 second rule.
  • If you hydroplane, let off the gas and steer in the direction of the skid. As you gain control back, gently straighten the wheels. Remain calm and do not make sudden motions.
  • Avoid flooded roads and never drive through moving water.
  • Never drive beyond the limits of visibility.
  • Also, remember to replace those old or brittle wipers!”
