WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla City Council did not object to a proposal by city officials that the city’s July 4 fireworks display be postponed because of the extremely hot and dry conditions. The action came at a special meeting of the council today (Tuesday).
The new date for the display will be announced at a later date.
Also at the meeting, the council voted to approve an ordinance that would authorize the city manager to prohibit the discharge of any or all fireworks within city limits. The ordinance will go into effect a year form today, but could take effect sooner if the Revised Code of Washington is amended to allow for an earlier effective date.
Meanwhile, the Walla Walla Fire Department is urging residents to follow the city’s example and not set off fireworks this weekend because of the greatly increased risk of fire.
“Sparks and flames from fireworks can easily be carried to flammable materials and start fires that endanger people, pets and property, and spread area firefighting resources dangerously thin,” Fire Chief Bob Yancey said. “Our firefighters would like to thank area residents for doing what it takes to help keep our valley safe.”
