Helicopters return after drones ground air crews near Pendleton

UMATILLA COUNTY — Aerial firefighting operations have resumed on a 1,500-acre wildfire east of Pendleton. Early Wednesday morning, helicopters were grounded after public drones were spotted flying near the blaze, the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) said. A temporary flight restriction is in place, and helicopters rejoined the suppression efforts shortly before noon.
As a result of the public drones, ODF grounded two suppression helicopters, which had to wait it out on the tarmac at the Eastern Oregon Regional Airport in Pendleton.
Fire officials issued a stark warning to the public: “If you fly, we can’t!”

According to the ODF, grounding firefighting aircraft severely hampers suppression efforts and allows wildfires to rapidly expand, creating an increased threat to lives, homes, property, and natural resources.
The Old Emigrant Fire is burning through grass, brush, and timber in the Mission Creek area. It is currently 45 percent contained.
A Level 1 “Be Ready” evacuation notice remains in effect, warning nearby residents to prepare for potential evacuation.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
