PENDLETON – Pendleton School Superintendent Kevin Headings looks to the future as he winds down his first year as school district CEO. He says one goal never changes, and that is to always strive for excellence in teaching.
That doesn’t mean a teacher speaks and the students listen and learn. Headings said a great deal has been learned about the best way to give knowledge to students comes when they are active participants in the process.
“The best way that we know now that students learn is through high-level engagement,” he said. “They should be talking about the content whether that’s with a peer, with a teacher, or in a group.”
And that’s just the first step to learning. He said students need to think about the content as well and talk about their thoughts. He says that the district will focus on upping the level of instruction in the classrooms.
