Proposal to allow ATV use in Prairie City

A proposed ATV Highway Access Route designation would allow ATVs on a ½ mile segment of US-26 (also known as John Day Highway and Front Street) in Prairie City, east of John Day. 

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s (OPRD) All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Highway Access Routes Advisory Committee is soliciting public comments about the proposed access route, which stretches from approximately Dixie Creek to NE Buchanan St. (milepost 174.96 to 175.58). If designated, the segment would provide ATV access to local businesses as well as Malheur National Forest lands to the north and south of Sumpter. 

Public comments about the proposed designation may be submitted through Nov. 10 via email to ATV.highway@oregon.gov.

A public conference call/webinar is scheduled for 6 – 7 p.m. Nov. 8 and will feature an overview of the proposed access route and more information about the ATV Highway Access Routes program.
