UMATILLA INDIAN RESERVATION – Progress is visible on the replacement of Thornhollow Bridge. The span over the Umatilla River collapsed during flooding in 2020 and was removed by Umatilla County in 2022.

“They’ve begun pouring concrete on the deck,” Commissioner Dan Dorran said. “It’s a great thing to see, for sure. Everybody’s excited.”

Located about 13 miles east of Mission along Thornhollow Road, the bridge was the closest river crossing for those living north of the river and in the Thornhollow area.

“Thornhollow Bridge has taken longer than we all hoped for,” Dorran said. “We’re getting there. We still have some work to be done, but it’s darn good to see some progress.”

When work on the project finally began this spring, the Oregon Department of Transportation said most of the work would be finished late this fall. It was anticipated that final work including the approaches to the bridge will be done in the spring of 2026.

The project is budgeted at $5.3 million. Umatilla County is providing a 10.27 percent match.
