Probable wolf depredation in Union County. Lostine lethal removal permit expanded

UNION & WALLOWA COUNTIES – ODFW recently gave notice of a probable wolf depredation in Union County. The incident was initially investigated on June 18 and occurred in the Cabin Creek area on Private land, resulting in the deaths of 3 3-month-old lambs. The attack, again listed probable rather than confirmed, has been attributed to the Balloon tree pack.

In addition, ODFW has released an update on a previously issued lethal removal permit for the Lostine area. The full update is as follows:

“On June 21, 2024, ODFW authorization for removal of one wolf in the Lostine area was increased to two wolves and extended from June 30 to July 31. Three confirmed depredations and two probable depredations (5/24/24 entries on depredation table) have been attributed to a previously unknown wolf or wolves in the southern portion the Sled Springs WMU and the northern portion of the Minam WMU since a permit was issued on May 15, 2024.

This authorization allows removal by the producers or their agent(s) through limited duration permits on the private land pastures of two affected producers. The producers have been using regular human presence patrolling day and night, removal of attractants, night penning within electromesh and in a barn, and scare devices to reduce conflict. Each limited duration permit is valid until July 31, 2024, or until a wolf is removed, whichever comes first. The authorization also allows USDA Wildlife Services to remove the wolves in the area. Another update about the authorization will be posted if wolves are killed or the authorization is extended.”
