UMATILLA COUNTY – Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt has said his office will not prosecute protesters who are arrested unless they damage property, steal, or use force or the threat of force against people.

“His philosophy and his thought process on how to handle his criminal case load is a little bit different than mine,” Umatilla County District Attorney Dan Primus said of Schmidt’s decision.

Primus said things are different in Umatilla County.

“We are going to hold individuals accountable for the crimes that are committed,” he said. “I don’t make the laws. We follow the laws that are put in front of us.”

Primus said the laws are set by the Oregon Legislature and the citizens of the state and his oath is to enforce them. “The community, I think, is behind my office in the prosecution of these cases,” Primus said.
