SALEM – The Oregon Court of Appeals has reversed the murder conviction against George West Craigen of Milton-Freewater in the 2011 slaying of Cecil “Rob” Carter. Craigen was successful in arguing that law enforcement officers should not have questioned him without his lawyer present because they should have known he had an attorney due to another court case against him.

The case won’t immediately be returned to the Sixth Circuit Court.

“The Department of Justice is going to take a look at what steps to take moving forward regarding whether or not they want to seek review at the higher court,” Umatilla County District Attorney Dan Primus said.

Whether the case goes to the Supreme Court or not, Primus said if it ends up coming back to Umatilla County, he’s ready to play hardball.

“The intention of our office is to have a retrial,” he said.
