Prescribed burning in Jane 106 on the Emigrant Creek Ranger District

HARNEY COUNTY(Released by the U.S. Forest Service-Malheur National Forest)-UPDATES: 5/30AM: Today firefighters will be continuing ignitions utilizing a helicopter for aerial ignition.

5/29PM: 400 acres were completed yesterday of blackline and drone ignitions. Contractors completed Upper Pine F, residual smoke will be in the area.

5/29AM: Contractors will be burning within the Upper Pine F Unit today.

5/28PM: Accomplished 100 acres with black lining and some utilization of drone ignitions. As smoke continues to impact the 17rd, please be aware of firefighters working along the road and in the area. Please utilize safe speeds and caution in the area.

Jane 106 prescribed burn is set to begin on approximately 2,415 acres on the Emigrant Creek Ranger District. This unit is near Beaverdam Creek, along the FS roads 1700, 1705 and 935.

Ignitions are planned to begin this week, weather conditions permitting. There are plans to utilize aerial ignitions. The public may see and smell smoke throughout the operations and are encouraged to use caution around the area. Firefighters will continue to monitor the area for several days after completion.

Each prescribed burn is designed to accomplish specific objectives related to increasing forest health. Prescribed burns will be conducted only under appropriate conditions to ensure firefighter and public safety. Appropriate conditions include correct temperatures, wind, fuel moisture, and smoke weather forecast. When these criteria are met, firefighters implement, monitor, and patrol the burn to ensure the forest health and public safety goals are met.

Prescribed fire information is available to the public on a tri-forest online map. The map is labeled and color-coded to show each burn unit’s status: planned, active, or completed. Additionally, forest users can view other features including current and past-year burn units, National Forest boundaries and State wildlife management boundaries.
