WALLOWA COUNTY – A heads up for Wallowa County residents or anyone planning a hunting trip in Wallowa County this weekend, the U.S. Forest Service has announced a planned prescribed burn in the Starvation Ridge area of the Wallow Valley Ranger District, assuming conditions remain ideal. The burn is expected to begin this Friday, October 2nd, and may last for several days. As written by the Wallowa Whitman National Forest in a recent post:
Hunters should be aware that these prescribed burns will directly affect the Sled Springs Hunting Unit 57. Smoke may impact the Chesnimnus Hunting Unit 58 as well. We ask hunters to adjust their plans accordingly.
We understand these treatments may create challenges for hunters and other forest users. However, the long-term objective is to improve forest health and habitat conditions across the area.
Please do not call 911 if you see smoke in the area. Smoke may be visible from surrounding areas during and after the burn.
Please use caution in the area and watch for fire personnel and equipment.
